Sikkim
Intro:
Sikkim is a state of its own character and history. The Kingdom of Sikkim dates back to 17th century when it was ruled by a Buddhist king, Chogyal. The royalty status remained unchanged until 1975, when the people deposed the monarchy. It was only then that Sikkim became the 22nd state of India.
Sikkim’s panorama is dotted with Buddhist stupas and prayer flags. Traditional, mural-filled monasteries exist alongside oriental-styled Hindu temples. The state’s population is now a healthy mix of Nepalis, Lepchas and of course, Sikkimese.
Since 2016, Sikkim has declared itself ‘all organic’ and has banned the use of plastic. The high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the state is a lesson for everyone across the country.
One of the key attractions of Sikkim, however, is the crisp views of the world’s third largest mountain, Kanchenjunga (also spelt as Khangchendzonga). Through the steep, plummeting valleys of rhododendrons and pale green woodlands, Sikkim stands out for the best views of the Himalayas in the country.
