Himachal Pradesh (Snow Drive)

Intro:

Himachal Pradesh—a state known for its undulated green high mountains blanketed by majestic snow peak ranges—has much more to offer than just grand landscapes.

The north Indian mountain state is steeped in history and has been a part of most significant historical journeys. It has been a part of the ancient trading route. Later it was heavily influenced by Buddhist culture and various Hindu kingdoms. In the 19th century, the British picked pockets in the state as their summer homes and so came into being the colonial towns of Shimla, Dalhousie and Dharamshala. Much later in 1971, Himachal achieved statehood.

Today, Himachal is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India. At a close distance from the national capital, summer sees a huge influx of family, group, international and solo travellers. While the state capital, Shimla, and other towns, like Manali, experience over-tourism, there are many pockets which are off-the-beaten road.

Itinerary:

In Himachal Pradesh, today is more scenic than yesterday. We start our exploration with the village of Sangla in Kinnaur district. Heading eastwards we will stay in Chitkul, which is the last inhabited village on the Indo-China border. Chitkul is known for its stunning snowcapped landscape on the banks of River Baspa.

Driving northwards to Kalpa and Nako, which is the highest village in Hangrang valley, we will exit Kinnaur district to enter Spiti and Lahaul district. This trans-Himalayan district is much like Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, in its topography and cultural affiliations. Perhaps Tabo is one of the few villages of the district to have fertile spoil for vegetation in the otherwise barren high altitude region.

In Tabo, we will make a mandatory visit to the ancient Tabo Monastery, also known as Ajanta of the Himalayas. Only a short distance away is the impressive Gue Mummy Stupa which houses the remains of Sangha Tenzin, Buddhist monk and is believed to be more than 500 years old.

In Spiti and Lahaul, our 4×4 will take you through many sustainable villages in the district. These include Komic (world’s highest inhabited village), Kye Monastery (the oldest and biggest monastery in the district), Langza—known for prehistoric marine animals and plant fossils, and Kibber (world’s highest village connected by paved road). We will also stop at Hikkim village’s post office—which is the world’s highest post office—from where you can send a postcard back home, if you’d like.

Our journey in Spiti is not complete without a visit to the grand and awe-inspiring Dhankar Gompa. This 16th century fort monastery stands on the confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers. It has also served as a prison in the past. Pin Valley is another stunning region in Spiti. It is known for being a thriving habitat of ibexes and snow leopards.

Immerse yourself in the serenity of Chandratal, or Moon Lake. The natural lake is surrounded by mountains and gets its name owing to its crescent shape.

On our journey we will cross many treacherous patches like Malling Nala and many high altitude passes like Kunzum Pass which offers a view of Bara-Shigri Glacier, second largest glacier in the world. Rohtang Pass is a popular section to cross while entering or exiting Lahaul and Spiti. There is also the off-road territory of Sach Pass which connects Chamba and Pangi valley.
